The Trofeo Andratx-Mirador d'Es Colomer set the second day of the Mallorca Challenge, today. After 149 kilometers the climbers decided the race on the Mirador d’Es Colomer. Stephen Cummings of MTN-Qhubeka attacked shortly before the finish and won the race. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Davide Formolo (Cannondale-Garmin) went for the podium spots. Being the best rider of BORA – ARGON 18, Björn Thurau finished in 21st place.
“Today, the climbers of our team had their first test under race conditions after a long training phase and an intense training camp. We knew beforehand, that we can’t compete for a result here. But we are more than satisfied with the guys’ performance level. All riders did a very good job today and they all went to their limits. Due to races like today as well as the upcoming races and recovery breaks it will not be long before we see our riders competing for results“, comments Sport Director Enrico Poitschke the season opening for the team’s climbers.
The third day of the Mallorca Challenge gives the climbers another opportunity to shine. The profile of the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana includes no less than seven mountain classifications on 165 kilometers. Among them is the Puig Major, the highest mountain of the Balearic Island, which has to be climbed 20 kilometers before the finish. The Puig Major was also part of todays race, but tomorrow the peloton will conquer it from the other direction. BORA – ARGON 18 will start with the same line-up tomorrow.
