Theo Bos won the second stage of the Volta ao Algarve to Lagoa with a powerful sprint and proved too quick for rest of the bunch.

The Dutchman of the Blanco Pro Cycling team beats Giacomo Nizzolo (RadioShack Leopard) and Bruno Matos Sancho (Carmim-Tavira). He takes takes the leader’s jersey from his teammate Paul Martens, who won the first stage.

“It’s really another collective victory because my teammates did a great job setting up the lead-out train. The last kilometre was really difficult with some uphill in the beginning, a bit of downhill, but the last 100 meters again uphill. Tom Leezer dropped me off at 300 meters from the finish line. I choose the wheel of Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) but he seemed to have problems with his chain. Our team controlled the race in the beginning, which was good for me surviving the two climbs. I am really satisfied with this victory, this is my fifth race in the early season.” Bos said afterwards.

Sports director Frans Maassen was happy with the team performance. “We could control the race in the beginning. Having Sep Vanmarcke in the breakaway was even better. The guys kept a good pace to give Sep the opportunity. Halfway the stage the Omega Pharma-Quick Step formation started their work for Cavendish. Untill 6 kilometres from the finish it looked pretty good for him though. He was caught by the bunch because they sent him in the wrong direction on a large roundabout. Tomorrow will quit different, but maybe some chances for guys like Steven Kruijswijk and Wilco Kelderman.”
