Theo Bos was hoping to kick off the second part of his season with a win in the first stage of the Tour de Wallonie but he lacked power in the bunch sprint. He now hopes to get more chances in the next two stages.
The Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM began the Tour de Wallonie with a ninth place in the opening stage today. Theo Bos sprinted to the result but was only moderately satisfied afterwards.
“It was a fine day,” said Bos. "My legs were good during the race, but less so in the sprint. It was a hard sprint because we had to begin from zero due to a sharp corner with 1800 metres to go. Unfortunately, I did not have the power to do an extra acceleration. I was pretty well positioned, but maybe I should’ve waited a little longer. That would have been better.”
Sports Director Jan Boven saw the rest of the team roll through the first day well.
“Only Barry Markus had some trouble and arrived at the line a little later.”
The sprinter sustained a fracture in his hand in the Tour of Belgium and only returned to racing for the first time today after nearly two months.
Nick van der Lijke and Jonathan Hivert are the Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM’s GC riders.
"They felt good today, although it wasn’t really hard enough for them.”
Bos is hoping for a second chance in the next two days
“After that, the stages get really difficult. Tomorrow is also a little bit hard since one of the climbs along the way is the Citadel of Namur. Anyhow, this is a great race with many sprinters and many good riders.”
