Nacer Bouhanni has long been rumoured to be leaving FDJ.fr as the internal rivalry with Arnaud Demare is creating several conflicts. The Frenchman now reveals that he is considering three offers and that one of them is from his current team.
In the last few years Nacer Bouhanni and Arnaud Demare have been able to co-exist in the FDJ team, with the two sprinters having separate race programmes and different targets. This year, however, things have started to unravel and Bouhanni has publicly vented his frustration over his role in the team.
It all started in March when Bouhanni wasn't selectd for Milan-Sanremo which was one of his big season targets. After publicly criticizing his team, he made it clear that he might find a new squad for the coming season.
Since then he has gone on to dominate the sprints in the Giro d'Italia, winning three stages and the points jersey, and it is clear that his team manager Marc Madiot will like to keep him onboard. Recently, Demare and Bouhanni had a meeting in an attempt to settle the conflict but there is still tension between the two sprinters.
Bouhanni reports that he has had offers from several teams but that he has narrowed down the list of possibilities.
"I had ten offers, now I'm going to choose between three teams," he told L'Equipe. "The conditions are identical for all three, a two-year contract and the same pay. So you have to look at the sporting aspects."
It is believed that the offers are from FDJ, Cofidis and a foreign team and Bouhanni is still considering the option of staying at FDJ.
"I have never done the classics," he said. "Marc has told me that there will be a redtributions of roles. First I need to know which calendar FDJ want to offer me. I don't think that I will make my decision before the French championships. If I sign with FDJ, I want to do the Tour."
The question of Tour participation is an important one. Both Demare and Bouhanni have been included in the long list but while most of Demare's lead-out team have made the list, none from Bouhanni's support crew are there. Still Bouhanni wants to return to the race where he made his debut in 2013 and makes it clear that he has no trouble sharing the sprinter role with Demare.
Madiot says that he needs more money to keep Bouhanni in the fold and won't promise his sprinter that he will be at the Tour.
"It is a question of means, I have to discuss it with my sponsor, and also find a co-sponsor," he said.
"First, has he recovered from the Giro? We understand each other. If Thibaut Pinot wins the Tour de Suisse, he can say, 'Marc! I deserve to have a partner with me.' Why not get a rider who can help on the mountain instead of two sprinters? That may be an option."
Bouhanni will spend the next four days at a training camp in the Vosges.
