Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) narrowly missed out on a repeat of last year's win in the final stage of the Tour of Oman when he was beaten into second by André Greipel (Lotto Belisol). The French sprinter regrets that his lead-out man Sebastien Chavanel had failed to protect him from the wind.
Last year Nacer Bouhanni took a beautiful win on the final stage of the Tour of Oman. After a number of near-missed in the first sprints in this year's edition of the Omani race, the Frenchman was eager to repeat that performance when the event again ended with a bunch sprint at the Matrah Corniche in the capital of Muscat.
It wasn't to be for Bouhanni though as he was again beaten by André Greipel who had also been first across the line when Bouhanni had finished 3rd on stage 3. Hence, Bouhanni missed out on his second win of the season, after his victory in the Etoile de Besseges.
This year Bouhanni has a new lead-out man as he has specifically asked manager Marc Madiot to sign Sebastien Chavanel. Laurent Mangel brought the train of William Bonnet, Arnold Jeannesson, Chavanel and Bouhanni into position but according to Bouhanni, a mistake from Chavanel cost him the win.
"Greipel was in the right-hand side of the road with Kristoff of his wheel. I could not push him away from that position," Bouhanni told the team's website. "Sebastien launched the sprint but when he stopped, I hit the wind. The best would have been to continue to protect me from the wind but that is easy to say after the race."
In addition to missing out of a stage win, FDJ also narrowly missed a top 10 on GC, with Jeannesson finishing 11th. The Frenchman climbed splendidly on the Green Mountain but missed being one of the best 10 due to a mistake on one of Friday's descents. Kenny Elissonde was 2nd in the young riders' classification behind Romain Bardet.
