In the next round of the Track World Cup in London, this December, we find five Olympic champions, but Bradley Wiggins will not be present. The winner of the Tour de France in 2012 announced that he wanted to compete in the team pursuit at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Now is unlikely to see the 34-year-old rider in competitive action at the velodrome until 2015.
Laura Trott, Phil Hindes, Jason Kenny, Steve Burke and Joanna Rowsell are selected, returning to the scenes of their Olympic triumphs in 2012, but Ed Clancy, unusually, is a non-travelling reserve. Clancy is ordinarily the first name on the teamsheet for the men's endurance squad, but will only travel to the Lee Valley VeloPark (formerly the Olympic Velodrome) if there is illness or injury to another member of the group.
"The home round of the World Cup series is a competition the whole team looks forward to and the fact that this event is taking place in the Lee Valley VeloPark makes this event extra special for us. The crowd support during London 2012 was phenomenal and gave the team a huge lift so hopefully the public will get behind us once again and support us on our journey to Rio", explained the British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton.
