Eduard Grosu (Nippo-Vini Fantini) sprinted to a breakthrough fifth place in stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia. It is the best result for a Romanian rider in the history of the race.
After the bad accident for Daniele Colli, Eduard Grosu is the designated sprinter of the team, with a condition growing day by day after two weeks of riding in the pink race. It was a difficult and wet sprint as demonstrated by the crash that changed the GC. Eduard Grosu was there for the last five kilometers with a great determination and good positioning and was not afraid despite his young age, always staying with the best riders in the top 10 until the last bend when he did the sprint.
”It was a difficult sprint on a wet road," he said. "I was there but in the last 300 meters I had to brake twice: in the last bend where I was boxed in and 150 meters from the finish because I was too close to the barriers. For that reason I to congratulate Modolo, it wasn’t easy to win. I’m happy because this fifth place is the best result ever for a Romanian rider in the history of the Giro d’Italia, but I’m not satisfied. I want to do better. There are still two possibile sprints in this Giro d’Italia and I want to be part of them."
