The final stage of this year's Ster ZLM Toer led over 183 kilometers from Eindhoven to Boxtel. Michael Schwarzmann was able to repeat his very good result from yesterday in the final sprint today. With his fifth stage rank, he also claimed the 11th place in the overall classification - followed by teammate Zak Dempster who completes the stage race in 12th.
Today's stage win went to Matt Brammeier (MTN - Qhubeka), who won the day by surprising the peloton with a solo attack. Shortly before the finish, Brammeier took advantage of a slower pace in the field to avoid the widely expected mass sprint.
"Today it was a bad weather stage with a surprising outcome. The escapees were caught again relatively early. Then no team wanted to take the leadership for a while and this was the situation Brammeier used for his attack. Then, there was a proper standstill in the peloton – something I haven’t seen in my entire career. Only in the last kilometers, some teams took over again, but that was too late to get him. This was a clear surprise. Behind in the bunch sprint, we again focused on Michael. All the guys supported him and worked very well for him. With his fifth place he confirmed his performance from yesterday. And this is again a very good result", Andre Schulze, Sport Director of BORA – ARGON 18, comments on the surprising stage result.
"Overall, we are satisfied with the race. In particular, the cooperation of the guys was very convincing. Just yesterday on the most difficult stage, we have seen that without exception every rider is in a very good shape. We are witnessing a very strong team work and a very high level of performance. Something we can build on in the next races. This makes us also confident for the Championships", Schulze concludes.
