For several months, Sergei Chernetckii has been knocking on the door for a top 10 result in a WorldTour stage race. After the queen stage, the young Russian is now fifth in the Tour of Beijing.
Team Katusha’s Sergei Chernetckii moved up to 5th place in the overall classification after today’s queen stage of the Tour of Beijing. At the Mentougou Miaofeng, the mountaintop finish of the stage 4, Chernetckii took 9th place, finishing 10 seconds behind the stage winner Daniel Martin from Garmin Sharp.
"The climb was very fast. Perhaps, it was not too hard but because of a really high pace of the group during the whole ascent, it became really tough. I felt good today, the guys helped and supported me well, so I was able to save some energy for the finale. I tried to stay in front on the climb to control the situation. When Martin attacked I tried to follow him, but I missed a little bit. Anyway, I am happy to reach 5th place in the general classification. The race is not over yet, the differences are minimal, so tomorrow a new serious battle is expected. Every second counts. I will try to do my best to save my position," said Sergei Chernetckii.
Tomorrow the final stage of the Tour of Beijing will be held – the peloton will ride a city circuit of 117 km from Tiananmen Square to Bird’s Nest Piazza.
