With two stage wins for Matti Breschel and a dominant showing in yesterday's queen stage, Tinkoff-Saxo have been the strongest team in the Tour de Luxembourg. Today they was under a lot of pressure as a strong 9-rider group escaped early on but the team fought hard to keep things under control and deliver Breschel to the overall victory.
Matti Breschel has had a couple of difficult and injury-plagued seasons but now he seems to be back to his best. After winning two stages in a row, he could very close to a third one in today's final stage of the Tour de Luxembourg when he won the stage for second behind the only surviving escapee, André Greipel.
The missed stage victory couldn't dampen Breschel's spirits though as the result was enough for him to secure himself the overall victory and prove to the Tinkoff-Saxo management that he is ready for the Tour de France. The team laid the foundations for the win in the queen stage when they had three riders in the decisive six-rider group and there strength was underlined by an overall third place for Michael Mørkøv and a win in the teams clasification.
Unsurprisingly, Breschel was full of praise.
"I am very happy to win this race," he told Wort.lu. "It is a big victory for me. I am happy. Without the boys, I would never have done it. Today we were under a lot of pressure. We were struggling a little bit. We managed to keep it together. Everything turned out in our advantage. We can be proud."
"I knew we had a good opportunity of making a pretty decent result here but the boys really performed beyond my expectations," sports director Fabrizio Guidi said. "Today, a break went away at first and we had four riders working all day in front of the peloton to bring them back and they succeeded beautifully.
"On the final circuit, Andy Schleck launched a promising attack with a few followers but we remained cool as Oliver Zaugg and Ivan Rovny brought them back again. We couldn't do anything about Greipel who was sensationally fast today but Matti finished second on the line and we can now finally celebrate for a number of reasons. Matti's back in superb form, the team supported him perfectly, Michael (Mørkøv) finished 3rd overall and the results say it all."
