Friday’s stage 3 queen stage in the Tour of Denmark was a 200 kilometre trek taking place in blazing, sunny conditions. The peloton was challenged with a demanding and by now traditional final circuit in Vejle where the 4 climbs up Kiddesvej usually split the field entirely.
However, six escapees Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Sharp), Mikhail Ignatyev (Katusha), Mark Sehested Pedersen (Blue Water Cycling), Michael Reihs (Team Cult Energi), Søren Kragh Andersen (Team TreFor) og Mikkel Mortensen (Concordia Forsikring-Riwal) tried hard to work up a lead before the undulating finish.
The heavier riders in this group were dropped along the way and entering Vejle, a new break was established including Team Saxo-Tinkoff's Matti Breschel, Troels Vinther (Cult) and Lotto-Belisol's Lars Bak. Instigating repeated attacks, Bak seemed hell-bent on dropping his companions on the hilly circuit.
Bak never managed to break clear, though, and Breschel subsequently took over and attacked on the final climb up Kiddesvej and won the stage and took the overall lead.
