"That is why it probably did not work out. If I am alone, maybe they let me go," Burghardt says

Former double stage winner at the Tour de Suisse Marcus Burghardt tried to animate the finale of today's sixth stage of the race. The German attacked in the finale and bridged across to Peter Sagan but as the Slovakian jumped onto his wheel the break was doomed. Instead, his teammate Silvan Dillier mixed it up in the sprint.

Silvan Dillier notched another top 10 finish for the BMC Racing Team at the Tour de Suisse with eighth place in the bunch sprint that culminated Thursday's stage.  Dillier's result was his eighth top 10 placing of the season and added to a sixth-place finish Sunday when teammate Larry Warbasse was third.

Dillier said he overcame a sleepless night before the 192.8-kilometer race, still feeling the effects of going down in a crash a few hundred meters from the finish line on Wednesday.

"Tony Martin did a really good leadout for his teammate (stage winner Matteo Trentin)," Dillier said. "I was already a few meters behind and with the second group and it was hard to come back. Then was already 500 meters to go and it was really hard to keep pushing for the sprint."

Moments before, BMC Racing Team's Marcus Burghardt made his own bid for the win, attacking inside the final three kilometers.

"I thought it was a good moment," said the winner of two stages at the 2010 Tour de Suisse. "The bunch was staying still for a moment and everybody was looking to each other and I had a free wheel on the right side."

Burghardt's move drew out four others, but included Stage 3 winner Peter Sagan (Cannondale Pro Cycling).

"That is why it probably did not work out. If I am alone, maybe they let me go," Bughardt said.

Martin kept the race lead on the eve of Friday's 24.5-km individual time trial, six seconds ahead of Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant-Shimano) and 10 seconds ahead of Peter Sagan (Cannondale Pro Cycling). Cadel Evans is best for the BMC Racing Team in 26th, 51 seconds back.

"We tried to keep Cadel in front in the final, which was technical and hard," BMC Racing Team Sport Director Fabio Baldato said. "We tried to make the split for Burghardt, but Sagan was quick to jump on his wheel."
