Matthew Busche, who will compete at the Tour of Utah the next week, went to Richmond in order to discover the 2015 World Championship road race. According to Velonews, the U.S. national champion explained that the circuit is "super, super difficult".
"I didn’t ride the front part of the course, but the last part of the course will definitely be difficult. I think Libby [Hill], 23rd [Street], and Governor [Street] are going to be super, super difficult, especially 16 times. I wouldn’t imagine it’s going to be a big group in the finish." About the favorite, Busche named some riders. « It’s not a pure climber’s course, it’s not a pure sprinter’s course,” Busche said. “It really favors someone like [Fabian] Cancellara, [Peter] Sagan, those guys. [Greg] Van Avermaet, [John] Degenkolb, you name it."
The 16.5 kilometers road race circuit for the elite men and women tackles the daunting cobbled climb of Libby Hill Park, rising up from the James River, the 110m-long 19% grade of 23rd Street, and the smoothly paved but still taxing ascent of Governor's Street. All three climbs will feature in the last 3km of the road race, creating a proving ground for worthy champions. The junior, U23 and the collegiate championships will skip 23rd Street and use a 15.5km course.
Busche hopes to be selected by the national trainer. "Assuming I get selected, of course, I’ll be in the race as much as I can,” he said, “whether it’s the early breakaway, or trying to be around for the late breakaway … In the end of a race, to be honest, I would find it hard for myself to be with Cancellara or Degenkolb when they go full gas in those last couple climbs, in the last couple laps, but if I have an amazing set of legs that day, maybe I can be there."
