Davide Vigano got close to his second stage victory in stage 6 of the the Volta a Portugal but was beaten into second by Phil Bauhaus. Having taken back the points jersey, his Caja Rural team is satisfied with the balance and admits the superiority of their young rival.
Going into the sprint in today's stage 6 of the Volta a Portugal, Caja Rural dominated proceedings as the team put several riders on the front to set up stage 2 winner Davide Vigano for another victory. The Italian was given the perfect lead-out but had to be content with second after having been passed by Phil Bauhaus just before the line.
However, Vigano could console himself with the fact that he reclaimed the points jersey and his Caja Rural team heads into the rest day with a feeling of satisfaction.
"We worked perfectly but Bauhaus was faster than us," manager Jaime Garzon said. "It is a shame, but the important thing is to be there. It is difficult to win and these finales are very complicated.
"Now we go into the second part of the Volta with a good balance from the first half. Today we were the best team and finished 2nd and 8th on the stage. We lead the points classification and leads the youth competition [with Ruben Fernandez]. The balance is great."
