Caja Rural-Seguros RGA was very close to triumph in Volta a Portugal. Delio Fernandez snatched the victory after sitting in the final with his team leader. This resulted in Caja Rural obtaining the second placement of the stage after Fernandez.
The rider coming in just short with the tiniest bit of margin, 1 second, Jose Goncalves couldn’t beat the rider of the day. Goncalves had been sitting in the front group, outnumbered by the two W52-Quinta da Lixa riders Delio Fernandez and Gustavo Cesar Veloso, but still managed to get something out of it.
Goncalves is now 3rd in the general GC after Fernandez and new leader Veloso. His team-mate Ricardo Vilela is 4th in the GC down with 28 seconds, while Goncalves only is short by 6 seconds in the GC. Fernando Grijalba was in the breakaway of the day before being railed in.
Josemi Fernandez, Team Principal, commented on the performance by his team to the Caja Rural website:
"It was a shame, we have done a great job. Gonçalves had closed in on Delio, but I was a bit too late. We have to keep working and keep trying. Gonçalves is 3rd overall and leader of the points classification. Grijalba also has won the prize of fighting,” he said.
