Caja Rural must be having some mixed emotions after finishing the Circuito de Getxo today. They were entering the race with defending champion Carlos Barbero. They came out of the race with two crashes and a spot on the podium.
Amets Txurruka and Pello Bilbao went down in crashes during the stage, but both managed to get up and back to the peloton before finishing 10th and 11th respectively. The podium spot went to the defending champion Carlos Barbero. Barbero sprinted in the final with Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and JJ Lobato (Movistar).
The trio separated themselves from the rest of the pack before the Frenchman Bouhanni could celebrate the victory ahead of Lobato as 2nd and Barbero as third. Caja Rural also saw themselves in the breakaway with Lluis Mas.
Eugenio Goikoetxea, director of the team, took stock of the race and said this to the Caja Rural website.
"The team worked on the line as always, with Lluis in the break and Carlos for the victory, and we finished third. We have had bad luck all year with crashes and this do not abandon us. This time it was Amets Txurruka and Pello Bilbao. It evolves hopefully and as such it seems to be nothing,” he said.
