The organizers of the Volta ao Algarve (February 17-21) have received confirmation from Trek-Segafredo that the team will go into the Portuguese race with some of the best riders.
Fabian Cancellara, Olympic champion, three times world champion and three times winner of Paris – Roubaix and Tour of Flanders, will be in Algarve in his final year and will target the time trial. Fränk Schleck, with victories in prestigious races like the Tour de Suisse, Tour de Luxembourg and Criterium International, and Julián Arredondo will probably fight for the general classification.
Trek-Segafredo will line up with a rider who already knows how to win in Algarve: Stijn Delvolder won the Portuguese race in 2008.
The strong block of Trek-Segafredo will be completed by Yaroslav Popovych, Gregory Rast, Jasper Stuyven and Edward Theuns.
The 42nd Volta ao Algarve will have 24 teams at the start:
WorldTour: Astana, Cannondale, Etixx-QuickStep, FDJ, IAM Cycling, Katusha, Lotto Soudal, Lotto NL-Jumbo, Movistar, Team Sky, Tinkoff and Trek-Segafredo.
Pro Continental: Bora-Argon 18, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Gazprom-RusVelo, Novo Nordisk, Roth and Verva ActiveJet.
Continental: Efapel, LA Alumínios-Antarte, Louletano-Hospital de Loulé, Rádio Popular-Boavista, Sporting-Tavira and W52-FC Porto.
