Despite being a multiple world champion in individual time trial, Fabian Cancellara so far missed out on claiming a title in road race and made it clear that riding in a rainbow jersey before hanging up his wheels would be one of his biggest objectives for upcoming two seasons.
"It's clear that before I stop racing, I want that world title," Cancellara told the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. "But it really does not matter to me whether it is this year or next year [in Richmond (USA), ed.]."
Trek Factory Racing rider abandoned the Tour de France early in order to kick off his preparations towards the World Championships taking place in Ponferrada this year. Cancellara was due to attend some promotional events held by team sponsor in North America, but planned to start is build-up towards September event shortly afterwards.
"Once I slam the front door of my house behind me, my world championships preparation starts. From then my vision is completely focused on Ponferrada."
The 33-year old Swiss revealed earlier this year that his current contract with Trek Factory Racing, to expire by the end of 2016 season, might be the last one in his career as he has no intention to continue as a professional as long as his team-mate Jens Voigt.
In such circumstances, Cancellara has last two attempts to win the World Championship on the road and ride the following season clad in the rainbow jersey, currently held by Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida), and claimed that it’s irrelevant for his whether it happens in Ponferrada or Richmond next year as both courses should suit the Swiss classics specialist well.
"Perhaps I will be one of the many favourites in September, but after all these years as a pro, I have learned one thing: sport is anything but predictable."
"I haven’t explored the circuit, but I know the roads " he added. "I have already ridden them. And I've watched a lot of videos. Several of our team have been there before. I have a lot of information. Now I just need to follow my plan."
