Fabian Cancellara (Trek) has almost finished his cycling career: 2016 will be his last season. The 34-year-old Swiss confirmed his decision on Tuesday at the presentation of the Swiss Cycling Awards in Zurich.
"The bike is not my life, only part of it," Cancellara said. It is not certain that the Swiss will ride the full season in 2016. "The Rio de Janeiro Olympics is not on my program," he said.
Cancellara has been a pro rider since 2001 and has an impressive palmares. In 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 he was world time trial champion, in 2008 he won Olympic gold in Beijing in the race against the clock and silver in the road race. He has won the Tour of Flanders thrice (2010, 2013, 2014), Paris-Roubaix thrice (2006, 2010, 2013) and Milano-Sanremo (2008) once. E3 Harelbeke (3x), Strade Bianche (2x), Tour de Suisse, Tour of Oman, Tour of Denmark, Tirreno-Adriatco and stages in the Vuelta a Espana (3) and the Tour de France (8) are also on his list.
In 2015 Cancellara had a bad season. In E3 Harelbeke, The Trek leader for the spring classics broke two vertebrae that forced him to miss his favorite races. In the Tour, he was wearing the yellow jersey when he crashed and again broke some vertebrae. In the Vuelta he had to abandon due to illness, after which he decided to skip the World Championships in Richmond.
