Unsurprisingly, Fabian Cancellara (Trek) has defended his Swiss national time trial title after he beat Stefan Küng and Silvan Dillier (BMC) on a 44.7km course in Roggliswil. It’s his 8th year winning the jersey and the victory comes just days after he had to abandon the Tour de Suisse due to an inflamed arm caused by a bee sting.
Yesterday Fabian Cancellara learnt that he had been selected for the Tour de France by the Trek management. Today he celebrated his return to the world’s biggest race in the best possible way when he defended his national time trial championship title.
Last Sunday, he failed to start the final stage of the Tour de Suisse due to an inflamed arm caused by a bee sting but apparently he has recovered fully. He was the final rider down the ramp and took a convincing win on the 44.7km course in Roggliswil.
The talented Stefan Küng proved his enormous potential by finishing 2nd, losing only 49 seconds to the quadruple world champion. Another future star, Silvan Dillier, completed the podium, 18 seconds further adrift.
For local team IAM, the race was not a big success as Patrick Schelling in 5th were their best-placed rider.
The road race takes place on Sunday when Michael Schär (BMC) lines up as the defending champion.
Result:
1. Fabian Cancellara 57.55
2. Stefan Küng +0.49
3. Silvan Dillier +1.07
4. Simon Zahner +3.11
5. Patrick Schelling +3.40
