Since he announced his retiremnt, Fabian Cancellara feels freedom to speak out about the state of affairs in cycling. In an interview with Cyclingnews, the Swiss revealed that he plans visit the headquarters of the UCI to for the first time to pay to share his vision.
"As a cyclist, it is not easy to make a statement, because you always have to take care o the interests of the riders, team and sponsors," said Cancellara. "But I'm not a rider anymore. I think there are quite a number of things that are going well, but when I see how many good sponsors have stepped away from the sport and how we lose them again it is a problem. It seems like there are too many obstacles. I would like to help wherever possible.
"It may sound surprising, but I've never been in Aigle. I have never visited the offices of the UCI. So I have told Brian (Cookson, ed.) that I will go there this winter for an interview and to see how things are with the UCI. Ultimately, the UCI is the head of our sport. We must support them but also say what needs to change and what we can improve.”
