Since Monday Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack-Leopard) has been in Tuscany to add a finishing touch to his preparations for the forthcoming World Championships.
The Swiss time trial expert has apparently set his sights on all the three gold medals that are up for grabs as the Worlds kicks off in Florence, Italy, on Sunday.
Starting out with the UCI TTT World Championship on Sunday, Cancellara will spearhead the RadioShack-Leopard campaign to upset defending champions and odds-on favourites for this year’s race Omega Pharma-Quick Step.
The individual time trial on September 25 is likely to be Cancellara’s best shot at a gold medal even though he will certainly face stiff opposition from both reigning world time trial champion Tony Martin (OPQS) and Olympic time trial champion Bradley Wiggins (Sky) in what promises to be the most exciting time trial showdown in years. The Swiss powerhouse recently demolished the opposition in the time trial in the Vuelta a España while Wiggins once again established his time trial credentials by annihilating all pretenders in yesterday’s time trial in the Tour of Britain.
The road race on September is likely to be Cancellara’s highest priority, however. It is perhaps the only major title missing from his otherwise highly impressive palmares.
