Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack) is the big favourite for tomorrow's Paris-Roubaix, but the Tour of Flanders has had a less than ideal build-up with crashes on Wednesday and Thursday. However, the quadruple world champion remains confident that he will be able to take home a third cobblestone trophy in the Roubaix velodrome tomorrow.
Fabian Cancellara made himself the sole favourite for the Paris-Roubaix with his dominant performance in the Tour of Flanders. However, nothing has gone according to the Swiss' plans since he stepped down from the podium last Sunday.
He was unlucky to crash in Wednesday's final preparation race of the Sheldeprijs, and on Thursday he took a solo tumble when he was checking out the key pave sections. He is not completely unscathed but keeps focus on the bigger picture after a crash in Flanders forced him to miss last year's edition of the Hell of the North.
"The crash in the Scheldeprijs was a very fast one," he explained. "I didn't sleep well that night, because I lost some skin and also the muscle was touched. Yesterday's crash, during the recon ride for Roubaix, was with a much lower speed. It happened so quickly and I still can't really get it when I see the images. Overall, I'm very happy to be sitting here, and not in some kind of hospital bed, like last year."
The 2006 and 2010 winner remain confident in his team's ability to put him back on track ahead of tomorrow's showdown.
"We have excellent soigneurs and osteopaths in the team, so they're doing all they can to get me ready for Sunday," he said. "Of course, we keep the line. We have a very strong team and we have been focussed on these races for months now. These crashes are obviously not ideal for Roubaix, but we remain focussed. Everything is set for Sunday."
"You need a portion of luck," he continued. "In some editions of the race you don't have a single puncture, in other you have five punctures. We will not get stressed when we have a situation in the race. The team is strong, the material is superb and the staff is fantastic: both in the race car, as in the cars that will be on the parcours with wheels and bidons."
Everybody agrees that Cancellara is the big favourite for the race but the Swiss remains cautious. He was in a similar situation in 2011 where he ended up being caught out by team tactics.
This year he once again sees some very strong teams capable of challenging his might.
"Many people see me as the sole favorite for the race, but we will see how it goes," he says. "It's a special race and I see different scenarios. There are many teams that have a strong line-up: Team Sky, BMC, Lotto, Omega. Everybody will be racing to win - and so will we!"
