Fabian Cancellara and Luca Guercilena, general manager of Trek Factory Racing, have designed the first part of what will be the last season in of his long career. De Ronde and the Hell of the North will again be the two main objectives in his farewell year. The Volta ao Algarve is the main novelty.

According to BiciCiclismo, Cancellara (1981) will have the following schedule: Challenge Mallorca (January 28-31), Dubai Tour (February 3-6), Volta ao Algarve (February 17-21) Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (February 27, still uncertain), Strade Bianche (March 5), Tirreno-Adriatico (March 9-15), Milan-San Remo (March 19), E3 Harelbeke (March 25), Ghent-Wevelgem (March 27), Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) (April 3), Scheldeprijs (April 6) and Paris-Roubaix (April 10).

As in 2015, Cancellara and his team have chosen Mallorca to start the season, combining a team training camp with the Challenge Mallorca. He will make a first appearence in Algarve and skip the Tour of Qatar. It will be the final stage race before the start of the classics season. He may do Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and will definitely return to Strade Bianche, doing all the big classics until Roubaix. His participation in both Ghent-Wevelgem and Scheldeprijs depend on his feelings before the two cobbled monuments.

For Cancellara, it will be the 16th and final season and he will try to add to his impressive palmares that include three wins in both Flanders (2010, 2013 and 2014) and Roubaix (2006, 2010 and 2013) in addition to one San Remo (2008), three editions of E3 (2010, 2011 and 2013) and two of the Strade Bianche (2008 and 2012).

Later he will make a decision about the grand tours and a possible return to the Olympics even though he has previously ruled out participation in the Games in Rio.
