Everything was set for Fabian Cancellara to attack the hour record currently held by Ondrej Sosenka, but recent changes to the UCI regulations may put this ambitions on hold.
An attempt to break the record was planned to take place on the Mexican Aguascalientes Velodrome on Sunday, August 3rd, following months of preparations spent on building-up the endurance of the Swiss classics specialist and preparing a perfect bike for the important test.
Cancellara has been already cooperating with his team’s bicycle manufacturer, Trek, which spent significant amount of time and money in the development of the ideal bike. Thus, a sudden change in UCI regulations forbidding to use a non-traditional, aero bike in an attempt is significantly changing all circumstances and may force the Swiss time trialist to put his ambitions on hold.
However, it has been suggested by the Gazzetta dello Sport, that considering that rules have been changed in the middle of cycling season and Cancellara’s preparations, the Trek Factory Racing would be allowed to attack the hour record with respect to the regulations that were actual when his desire was first announced.
The hour record is currently held by Czech Ondrej Sosenka, as he managed to negotiate 49.7 kilometers in sixty minutes during the attempt taken on July 19, 2005 in Moscow.
