The main goal of the Cannondale team on this Tour de France was certainly to lead Peter Sagan to win his third green jersey in succession. In this sense, it was mission accomplished for the Italian outfit.
But like team director Stefano Zanatta told letour.fr: "Winning the green jersey was almost too easy this year…"
Which made the frustration even greater for their Slovak leader not to be able to add a 5th Tour stage win to his tally this year. There is still a chance for Sagan though, in the final stage on the Champs-Elysées. But Stefano Zanatta is definite: "In Paris, there will be Marcel Kittel and the rest…"
Sagan himself insisted he was content with just taking the green jersey this year:
"I didn't break anything and I will be able to reach Paris in the green jersey, which was my reason to be on this Tour", he said after the finish in Bergerac.
However Cannondale earned a fine consolation prize with the super-aggressive rider award which went to Alessandro de Marchi.
