BMC Racing Team's Damiano Caruso is eighth overall following Saturday's long individual time trial that saw him finish 33rd, but gain time on several others in the top 10.

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) regained the overall lead from Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team), who is now second, 2:28 back. Andrey Amador (Movistar Team) is third, 3:36 behind. 

Caruso is one of four riders in the top 10 who are within seven seconds of each other. He is clumped between two of Aru's teammates, Dario Cataldo (sixth) and Mikel Landa (seventh), and one of Contador's teammates, Roman Kreuziger (ninth). All are between 4:50 and 4:57 behind Contador.

"This was one of hardest time trial stages in my life," Caruso said. "The last climb was very, very long. But I think I did a good time trial and for the next stage, I will try to improve on my position."

Riding through steady rain, Caruso covered the 59.4-kilometer course in one hour, 21 minutes and nine seconds. Teammate Silvan Dillier was one second slower, for 34th place, while Amaël Moinard is now the BMC Racing Team's only other rider in the top 20. He is 20th, 10:52 back.

Sunday's 165-km stage features a mountain-top finish and is the last before the three-week race enjoys its second rest day on Monday.
