Spanish team Movistar fell victim of an incredibly unfortunate crash following the conclusion of the Volta ao Algarve stage race yesterday. Jonathan Castroviejo suffered a fracture of the sixth cervical vertebra and the ulna of his left arm by crashing into a spectator as he reached the coach of the team at the end of the last stage of the Portuguese race.
The rider was catching the team bus at the foot of the Malhao climb when a spectator crossed the road to pick up a water bottle and the impact was inevitable. According to Biciciclismo both rider and spectator were taken to the hospital.
The Basque rider remains at the medical centre, awaiting doctors’ assessments of his injuries and a decision on the way he'll be transferred back to his home in Spain.
