After his third place at last year's race, Jonathan Castroviejo reclaimed the Spanish time trial title when he won today's 2015 edition of the championships. The Spaniard led a strong Movistar showing by beating his teammate Gorka Izagirre and Jesus Herrada by 1-08 and 2.01 respectively.
For several years, Castroviejo has clearly been the leading Spanish time triallist but last year he lost his title when Alejandro Valverde showed superior Tour de France condition by taking a surprise victory. This year the team leader was absent when the race was held om a 45.6km course in Caceres and this opened the door for Castroviejo to take back the title he won for the first time in 2013.
Today's win was another strong signal of his consistency as it marked his fifth consecutive top 3 finish in the race. With Izagirre and Herrada completing the podium, it was another clean-sweep of the podium for Movistar like in 2013 when Valverde, Ion Izagirre and Castroviejo occupied the top three spots.
While Movistar shone, it was a bad day for the in-form Luis Leon Sanchez who recently won the road race at the European Games in Baku as the Astana rider could only manage fourth and so missed out on a fifth title.
Castroviejo will be part of the formidable Movistar team for Sunday's road race where Valverde will lead the squad.
