Mark Cavendish professed himself contented with fourth place in the omnium at the third and final round of the UCI Track World Cup in Hong Kong.
Cavendish, who targets the multi-discipline event at the Olympics, went into the final event, the points race, hoping to overhaul the Olympic champion, Lasse Norman Hansen, and claim a spot on the podium but the Manxman was unable to overtake the Dane.
Nevertheless, Cavendish tried to look at the positive side of things, saying he would have been pleased with a top 10 placing at the start of the race due to his long absence from the track.
"I'm really pleased, personally," said Cavendish according to The Telegraph. "I did better than I thought I was going to do."
Cavendish’s participation in the Track World Championships in London in March is not a foregone conclusion, however, with Jon Dibben and Ed Clancy, the latter presently incapacitated due to an injury, also in the running.
Cavendish will make a return to the road later this month but he and his coaching staff must plan his next move as he looks for a place on the British Olympic team flying to Rio in August. Last week Great Britain Head Coach Shane Sutton told Cyclingnews.com that Cavendish could ride the Madison at the Worlds in March with Bradley Wiggins instead of competing in the Omnium. However, the Madison is no longer an Olympic discipline so Cavendish might be inclined focus on the omnium instead.
