As we have informed yesterday, Etixx-Quick Step confirmed signing of Fernando Gaviria and his countryman Rodrigo Contreras following tests which Colombians had undergone in the Bakala Academy on Tuesday. Even though the former gave Mark Cavendish hard times when they clashed in the Tour de San Luis in January and the Manxman is under a huge pressure to bring results as his contract with the Belgian squad expires by the end of 2015, he claims to be „over the moon” to have the 20-year old sprinter on board.
„Contrary to what some shit-stirrers may start yapping, I'm over the moon that @Etixx_QuickStep has signed @77Gaviria. Welcome dude!” - Cavendish posted on his Twitter account yesterday.
Rumours about Etixx-Quick Step being interested in signing the talented Colombian had started to circulate even before the Argentinian stage race came to its end, and were followed by a confirmation of inviting him for tests in the Bakala Academy released by the team last week.
Meanwhile, Gaviria successfully competed in the Track World Championships held in France, winning the men's omnium title with a truly impressive fashion despite crashing in the final points race.
The 20-year old Colombian also won two stages at the Tour de San Luis before acknowledging superiority of the Etixx-Quick Step sprinter and the U23 Men's Road Race event of the 2014 UCI Pan American Continental Road Championships.
