Great news for Mark Cavendish. The Etixx-Quick Step rider is headed in the right direction to be qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games thanks to his strong omnium performance at the Dudenhofen Grand Prix. He finished third place behind German Roger Kluge and Belgium Kenny De Ketele on the 250 metre outdoor track.

According to Cyclingnews, the British rider needed 90 points to qualify for the World Cup meets in Cali (Colombia) in November, Cambridge (New Zealand) in December, and Hong Kong (China) in January, which in turn offer qualification points for Rio. He needs a modest Omnuim placing in one of the World Cup events - or indeed at the Track World Championships in March - to be officially eligible for Rio. But each country will have only one place to give and Ed Clancy is currently Great Britain's preferred rider for the event.
