Colombian climber Esteban Chaves has finished 17th on a tough stage five of theTour de Suisse.
At 237.3km, the stage was the longest of the 2015 Tour de Suisse. It also contained two hors category climbs, including one to finish.
Chaves was ORICA-GreenEDGE’s top finisher, two-minutes 35seconds behind solo winner Thibaut Pinot (FDJ). The effort moves him into 13th overall, three-minutes 12seconds behind Pinot who also took the race lead.
“After the race Esteban was a bit down,” sport director Neil Stephens said. “He tried his best but couldn’t do anymore.
“Whilst he was a little upset, we were anything but.
“It was a beautiful mountain but one of the most demanding mountains I’ve seen in a long time. He gave it a shot, on the last climb he was there with the last ten riders and just got shelled from there.
“Sure we would have like to do better, but it was no disaster and it’s another step forward for Esteban Chaves.”
