Orica GreenEDGE has signed Esteban Chaves for 2 seasons after a fantastic 2012, in which he won the Gran Premio Città di Camoire and a stage and young riders jersey at the Vuelta a Burgos, and an injury hit 2013 with Team Columbia. He is also the 2011 winner of the Tour de l’Avenir. He spoke in an interview with Cyclingmole where he outlines his targets and plans for 2014:
“I have talked with the team and I will make my Grand Tour debut in the Vuelta a Espana. I like it. It suits my abilities and it’s at the end of the year, where hopefully I will have more confidence. I really like long climbs but not too steep a slope. I prefer 20-25km at 6-7%.”
“We stayed for 15 days in the first camp, it helped a lot to know colleagues, managers, coach, assistants and the whole group. I am very satisfied because as I said before it is a dream that is now a reality.”
Chaves has outlined the beginning of his season where he will race at San Luis, Langkawi, Volta a Catalonia, Basque Country and potentially the Ardennes Classics. However he says he has not yet thought of attempting to win the White Jersey for Best Young Rider (he is only 23) at any of the stage races he attends and that if it comes, it comes but he just wants to find his feet in the WorldTour and get back into the swing of things in terms of riding in a packed peloton. Anything else will be a bonus for the super talented Columbian Chaves.
