A spectacularly looking crash which Francesco Chicchi suffered yesterday at first appeared not to have any negative effects on rider’s health, but even though the 33-year old sprinter managed to finish yesterday’s stage, the situation has changes significantly over the evening and forced him to pull out of the Giro d’Italia.
A bad luck continues to chase the Neri Sottoli team, as Chicchi was their third rider to abandon the Italian grand tour, following withdrawals of Ramon Carretero and Giorgio Cecchinel.
The 33-year old Italian spectacularly flew over a road barrier while negotiating the flat parts of yesterday’s Giro d’Italian stage, but managed to remount his bike fairly quickly and nothing suggested that the Neri Sottoli rider was suffering any major injuries. The situation has changed in the evening, however, as a pain in a wounded thigh increased significantly despite receiving a double session of massage.
As a medical treatment didn’t better Chicchi’s health overnight, the Neri Sottoli doctors made a difficult decision to withdraw the sprinter from the 2014 edition of the Italian grand tour event and recommended three days of rest.
Obviously, the 33-year old rider expressed his disappointment with a premature end of his Giro d’Italia adventure.
“I feel very sorry, because, in fact, I was in a good condition. However, I was haunted by a bad luck throughout the whole Giro: in the first sprint in Ireland I punctured a few kilometers from the finish line, on the next day I crashed and broke the pedal, eventually I crashed again yesterday,” Chicchi told according to Neri Sottoli official website.
“I’m returning home disappointed, although I hope to recover quickly. I will take a three-day break and return ready to fight for good results shortly afterwards.”
