Another victim in Tour Down Under People's Choice Classic, Chris Sutton(Sky), who was 4th in the Classic, is now forced to quit the race due to a right wrist fracture. He was injured in the crash that severely injured Giovanni Visconti(Movistar), the latter broke his leg and is scheduled to have surgery.
"It's a massive blow not to be continuing on with the lads because they did an incredible job for me last night. My groin and my knee were pretty sore in the race but it was only afterwards, on the way back to the hotel, that my wrist started hurting and I couldn't grip the handlebars," said Sutton on his team's website.
Sutton was the designated sprinter on the Sky TDU team, but now there will be no sprinting opportunties for the Australian rider. Instead, the team will fly another Australian, Nathan Earle, to South Australia, to fill in the vacated position. Still, the team is full of praise regarding to Sutton, "It's a real shame to lose CJ because he was a in great condition heading into this race. What he did last night - getting back on his bike and sprinting the way he did after his fall - took a lot of courage and demonstrated how much this race means to him." says Sky's Sports Director Arvesen.
As the injury is not severe, Sutton is expected to be back in training in one week, and will target the Tour of Qatar race in early February, which also has a lot of sprint stages.
