The first night at the Ghent Six Day lived up to all expectation. The three top pairs were in front immediately and are involve in a close fight.

From the first event of the opening night, the points race, the pace was fast.  It was the duo Keisse/Viviani who won the first discipline. During the subsequent second points race, Wiggins/Cavendish were the strongest.

The Team Elimination and the one-lap time trial, however, were won by De Ketele/De Pauw. They could start the first madison of the evening, 35 minutes and six laps, with 42 points, just ten more than Wiggins/Cavendish and 15 more than the Belgian-Italian pair Iljo Keisse with Elia Viviani.  De Ketele/De Pauw and Wiggins/Cavendish, they were among the first to get a lap. Halfway through the race, Keisse/Viviani did so too, like the Australians Meyer and Scotson. They had a fierce battle for the win. Ultimately, Bradley Wiggins/Mark Cavendish came out on top, giving them 20 points.

The favourites continued to battle against each other in 't Kuipke. Iljo Keisse was strong in the derny but Mark Cavendish won the final. Elia Viviani won the super sprint. Moreno De Pauw and Kenny De Ketele were the best in the 500m time trial where they set a new track record: De Ketele delivered De Pauw perfectly, and the Belgian clocked at 26.90 for an impressive average speed of 66.91 km/h.

The Swiss pair of Tristan Marguet/Franco Marvulli clocked 27.03 on November 22, 2009. Christian Grasman and Moreno De Pauw matched that time on November 21, 2014.

Roy Pieters won the scratch race and the final madison was won by the Australian duo Meyer/Scotson. 

Overall, the top teams were present immediately but are still close together.
