24-year-old Bardiani-CSF sprinter Sonny Colbrelli may conclude a fantastic end to his season with a dream move to the WorldTour with Team Sky.

Sky has always had an Italian presence on their team due to Sky Italia being one of their biggest businesses. Salvatore Puccio is with the team and Dario Cataldo has departed for Astana, meaning Colbrelli and Elia Viviani are the two men in the hot seat to replace him.

Colbrelli has hit a rich vein of form, having never won a race before 2014, he has 5 so far this year and has taken his last 3 victories in the space of 19 days in addition to finishing in the second group on the road and 13th in the World Road Race Championships.

The Italian is focusing on winning the Coppa Italia with Bardiani but is flattered by the reports suggesting he will ride with the team in 2015.

“Right now I just want to concentrate on the end of the season. There’s still the Giro dell’Emilia and Trofeo Beghelli left for us to win the Coppa Italia,” Colbrelli told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Then we’ll think about a possible transfer. But a friendly agreement needs to be reached with the Reverberi family. Bardiani has given me a lot and I’ve given a lot to Bardiani too. But Sky would be a big opportunity.”

Colbrelli’s deal runs till 2015 but as his team is changing management company, all riders must re-sign new contracts and this would allow him to move.

Colbrelli has shown enough promise this year to merit a WorldTour contract and he even has the chance to be World Champion in future years is the courses are similar to Ponferrada. He has been a feature at the end of all the Italian one-day races, including third at Roma-Maxima and sixth at Milan-Sanremo.

Despite doing so well to shoulder the burden of leading Italy at his first Worlds, he was not happy with his result.

“The first image that comes to mind are those few metres, maybe ten, that I was behind the group that was chasing [Michal] Kwiatkowski. It’s not a happy picture,” Colbrelli said. “The 13th place counts for nothing, but it’s a symbol of both a missed chance and a promise for the next Worlds.”
