Team Colombia-Coldeportes closed the Bayern Rundfahrt in a positive way in the race’s last stage, 197,8 Km from Haßfurt to Nurnberg.
Colombian Brayan Ramirez was a protagonist of a 170km escape alongside 5 other riders before German John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) conquered the stage win in the bunch sprint, beating Rudiger Selig (Katusha) and Sam Bennett (Bora Argon 18). Brit Alex Dowsett (Movistar) claimed the German stage race’s overall win.
In the early part, Ramirez took part in a 6-man break that marked the day, together with Meintjes (MTN-Qhubeka), Vorganov (Katusha), Mager (Cult Energy), Veuchelen (Wanty) and Duyn (Team Rompoot). The escapees got a 4:30 maximum advantage, while the sprinters’ teams were in control in the peloton until the break was caught with 10km to go.
Giant’s riders moved to the front of the peloton to launch Degenkolb’s sprint. Colombian Juan Pablo Valencia, 28, was the best of the Escarabajos across Nurnberg’s finish line.
“Brayan had a very good stage today, showing his ability in long breakaways. His condition is clearly growing, and he will definitely find a good opportunity sooner or later. In the finale, we wanted to do the sprint with Duque, but it was a really frantic situation, because of teams going all-in and fully committed to their sprinters here”.
The Escarabajos will return to racing at Skoda Tour de Luxembourg (June 3-7).
