Javier Guillén, director of the Vuelt a Espana, is not ready to announce the five wildcards for the Spanish grand tour but he has hinted that Colombia-Coldeportes will be at the start line on August 22 after they missed out on an invitation for the Giro d'Italia.
In an interview with El Tiempo, Guillén notes that "Colombian cycling is booming. I see them as one of the major candidates to ride the race."
"We have good relationship with manager Claudio Corti who was at the presentation of the race and had the opportunity to speak to us. We have sent him good feelings so that we can deliver an invitation to the Vuelta a Espana," he explains. The wildcard to the Volta a Catalunya may be an indication of the team's opportunities.
Another key is politics: "The Government backs the team and that is the best guarantee we have. There are many reasons for an invitation, but the fact that the government is behind the group means a lot. I cannot anticipate anything, but I would like to have the team in the Vuelta. There is no doubt about that and the organizers are studying it," he told the Colombian newspaper.
According to Guillén, Colombia Team meets three requirements of the organizers: "a consolidated team, affinity and a strong connection to Spain."
Guillen believes that the team is suited to the hilly course of the Spanish race. "It's a feisty team and the Vuelta is a race that always aims for the sky, where there are mountains and that's one of the characteristics of their cyclists." And he is not focused on results. "It's not about winning, it's about having a serious team with tradition, with future and combativity. They have not had great victories, but they have shown that they can fight and be a protagonist. That's what you want as an organizer."
Caja Rural-RGA, Cofidis and Colombia seem to have spots in the 2015 Vuelta which leaves two free wildcards for other teams.
