Yesterday it was reported that Colombia had signed 18-year-old climber Daniel Martinez. Now the South American team has confirmed that the youngster will be part of the 2015 roster.
The face of the Colombia team looks younger with every passing day, just like the one of the Escarabajos’ latest recruit. The 17th man in Claudio Corti’s roster is named Daniel Felipe Martinez, was born in Bogotà and will turn 19 on April 25th, 2015 – meaning Team Colombia will again field one of the youngest rider of the pro peloton in 2015.
His name will not be a new one to all those who watched the Junior Road Race at the 2013 World Championships in Florence when Martinez spent the whole day in the break, eventually going on to finish 15th, and catching the attention of UCI that welcomed him at the World Cycling Center in Aigle (Switzerland), its training and formation center for young talents from all over the world.
Martinez’ climbing skills had already revealed in 2012, when he won the overall classification of the Vuelta del Futuro, one of the most important Colombian races for Cadets, while in 2014 he won the Junior National Championship road race (confirming his 2013 title) as well as the time trial.
“Martinez is an interesting rider, and he definitely had a valuable experience at the UCI World Cycling Center, helping him to start settling into European cycling," Claudio Corti explained. "But for us he is a long-term prospect: we want to start a learning process that hopefully will bring good satisfaction to both him and the team.”
