When Miguel Angel Rubiano pulled hard with Leonardo Duque on his wheel with just 700 meters to go in the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli, the members of Team Colombia-Coldeportes quickly remembered the 2013 edition, when the experienced Colombian prevailed at the finish of Monteveglio.
“Leonardo was strong and went over the day’s climbs without any problems and launched his sprint on the left side of the road. He was fast, much faster than other riders. If Colbrelli wouldn’t have gone on the left as well, we would now be talking of a different result," said DS Valerio Tebaldi.
Instead, it was Sonny Colbrelli (Bardiani) who took the victory, ahead of Manuel Belletti (Southeast) and Roberto Ferrari (Lampre-Merida), while Leonardo Duque had to settle for a strong fifth place.
“I have to thank to the whole team, because they did a great job. I gave it all to finish this season on a high note”, Duque said.
The race was decided from a group of around 30 riders, after the peloton was shattered on the Zappolino climb. There were several attempts of riders trying to go clear – one of these having Miguel Angel Rubiano as protagonist with ten other riders – but all those attacks were reeled in by the bunch.
“We tried to do something until the finish, but unfortunately we weren’t successful," Tebaldi said. “It’s a pity, because we were very keen on getting a good result.”
Also on Sunday, October 11th, the Abu Dhabi Tour concluded with the last stage, Yas Marina-Yas Marina (110 km), won in a bunch sprint by Elia Viviani (Team Sky). The general classification was won by Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge), while Daniel Martinez of Team Colombia-Coldeportes finished in 20th place.
