Fernando Gaviria is not the only Colombian that may join Etixx-QuickStep in 2016. According to BiciCiclismo, Rodrigo Contreras will also ride for Patrick Lefevere's Belgian team next year. Both riders will turn 21 in 2015.
The Spanish website reports that Lefevere and Giuseppe Acquadro who is the representative of the two Colombians, only need to finalize the details. With two stage victories, Gaviria may have been the sensation of the Tour de San Luis but Contreras' performance was no less remarkable. He finished fifth overall and won the youth classification. The Colombian was 10th in the first mountain stage to Mirador del Potrero, was sixth on Alto el Amago and finished 8th in the queen stage to Filo Sierras Comechingones powdered. In the time trial, he showed his versatility by finishing 15th. In fact, he won last year's Pan-American time trial championships and like Gaviria he was part of the Tour de l'Avenir that helped Migual Angel Lopez win the overall.
However, tendinitis in his right knee took him out of the World Championships. Fortunately, he has put those physical problems behind him as he proved in San Luis La Vuelta de la Juventud, the Tour de l'Avenir and the World Championships in Richmond will be his major goals in 2015 as it is the case for Gaviria. However, the latter will first focus on the Track World Championships which take place February 18-22 in Paris.
Gaviria, a sprinter, and Contreras, another Colombian climber, are the lastest talents from the South American country and if things go according to plan they will be riding for Etixx in 2016. Their agent Acquadro is the representative of several top riders, including Nairo Quintana, Michal Kwiakotwski, Rigoberto Uran, Carlos Betancur, Sebastian and Sergio Luis Henao, Esteban Chaves and several Spanish riders like Mikel Nieve, Rubén Fernández, Igor Antón, Luis León Sánchez, Ion and Gorka Izaguirre, Beñat Intxausti and Mikel Landa.
