When the peloton hit the foot of the Mur de Huy ascent for the third and final time in today’s Flèche Wallone the teams started fighting for position. Halfway through the climb a number of the pre-race favourites had to relinquish their ambitions of a Classics victory and Daniel Moreno (Katusha) rode to a surprise win.
One of the hotly tipped favourites, Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff), ran out of steam on the steep climb in Huy.
“I found it difficult to settle into a rhythm today,” said Contador. “I don’t know if it was due to fatigue or my break from active racing. On the final climb of the day my legs had absolutely no power to launch an attack so I decided to save my strength for Sunday’s race [Liège-Bastogne-Liège] where, hopefully, I will be fully recuperated and fit.”
