Brian Cookson has no doubts on what should be the priority for cycling. The president of the International Cycling Union has taken stock of the situation of the sport in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, emphasizing that the most important aspects are related to the "safety of the riders and the racing ."
"There have been too many accidents this year due to too many motorcycles but also due to the behavior of supporters,” he told the newspaper. “Everybody must have focus on the safety. We are at the limit of what is acceptable. The fans have to understand that they have the privilege of seeing a race up close but they must respect it. It was unacceptable what we saw in the Tour. It is so dangerous to take a selfie there. For our part, we have to think about limiting the number motorcycles in races. There are too many.”
The British president also discussed the World Championships in Doha. In those areas the weather can be special , with very high temperatures that could create problems for the riders. In addition to the postponement of the World Championships iton October, Cookson wants to ensure that the Extreme Weather Protocol will come into effect.
"In the case where there could be problems of this type, we will seek a solution that could result in a postponement of the race to the evening or even shortening the races.”
