Magnus Court (Cult Energy) again proved that he is a star in the making when he beat the WorldTour riders at the Tour des Fjords to win the third stage of the Norwegian race and take the leader's jersey off the shoulders of local hero Alexander Kristoff. The young Dane found it hard to believe his incredible success that included beating the reigning Milan-Sanremo champion.
Last year Magnus Cort surprised the entire cycling world when he won two stage at the Tour of Denmark in a field that was loaded with WorldTour riders. Having already had a very successful 2014 season, he repeated the feat today when he won the third stage of the Tour des Fjords.
The foundations for the win was laid by strong teamwork after he escaped with teammate Lass Bøchman in a six-rider chase group. His compatriot sacrificed himself to allow the group to join the front trio and finally kept things together for a sprint where his faster teammate took a convincing win.
The victory moved the talented Dane to the top of the overall standings, 2 seconds ahead of Jerome Baugnies (Wanty), 10 seconds ahead of Michael Valgren (Tinkoff-Saxo) and - more importantly - 13 seconds ahed of previous leader Alexander Kristoff (Katusha).
"It's totally crazy," Cort said. "I have taken the yellow jersey off Alexander Kristoff's shoulders - on his home soil. I don't know what to say. I had the dream of taking a win in a professional race like I did last year but I do not do many of those races which makes it hard to really focus on it.
"It's amazing that we - a small continental team - can do this. Not only did we win the stage, we also animated the racing massively and beat them all in a completely honesy fashion. We got no gifts. Tinkoff-Saxo had two riders in the group and one of them didn't do any turns but they couldn't get rid of us. Everybody in the group except one were professionals. This proves how strong this team is."
"The team was eincredible today. I am the rider who has taken most wins, but this is a victory for the tea. Without my teammates, I wouldn't have taken these victories. As a team, we prove how strong we are.
"We won't give up the yellow jersey without a fight. If we can win this race overall, it would be really great. But it will be difficult for us to control because there is a risk that the big teams will be racing against us and in any case, Kristoff can take back the jersey by virtue of bonus seconds."
