Rui Costa got close to his first win in the rainbow jersey in today's queen stage of the Tour of Beijing but the Portuguese had to settle for 4th. Instead, his teammate Benat Intxausti took both the stage win and the leader's jersey and Costa was happy with the success of his team.
Rui Costa was intent on ending his time at Movistar on a high and targeted the overall win in the Tour of Beijing. Yesterday his team rode hard to set him up for an attack on the final climb and today the team tried to make the race hard to prepare a win for their world champion.
In the end, the team got its success but it wasn't through the world champion who was unable to keep up with Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp) and David Lopez (Sky) in the end. Instead, it was his teammate Benat Intxausti who took the spoils by launching a wily attack with 2km to go.
Costa was happy for the success of his teammate.
"It was a hard stage as expected but we fought and got the stage win with Intxausti. I was fourth in the mountaintop finish and moved up to fourth place on GC. I'm happy with my result and especially with my teammate's win," he wrote on Facebook.
The top of the GC is almost identical to the outcome of today's stage and so Intxausti leads the race with Costa sitting in 4th. The world champion doesn't expect things to change in tomorrow's flat final stage in the centre of Beijing.
"Unsurprisingly, today's top 10 is the final classification. Tomorrow will undoubtedly be a day for the sprinters," he added.
