Cancellations are becoming a bit of a bad habbit in pro cycling following stages being cancelled in Paris-Nice and Tiireno-Adriatico due to snow. We may lose the hardest summit finish in the Volta a Catalunya, after the summit finish at Port Aine still reportedly being covered in 75cm of snow just five days before its stage is due to take place.
While the Paris-Nice cancellation on a hilly stage didn’t prevent a GC rider from winning the race, the cancellation in Tirreno of the queen stage allowed Greg Van Avermaet to win the GC. In Catalunya, if the Port Aine stage is cancelled, a climber should win as the previous day’s stage on La Molina always goes ahead, with snow lining the side of the road the past two seasons.
