Even though after briefly analyzing a situation in the Giro d’Italia general classification just before the peloton hit the mountains for the first time Nairo Quintana was a rider expected to go on an offensive last weekend, it was Domenico Pozzovivo who made a highly anticipated move and significantly reduced time loss to his rivals .
The 31-year old Italian revealed that he aims to follow the same approach in the remaining two weeks of the Italian grand tour and that his Sunday’s move gave him a confidence boost to target the Giro d’Italia podium, what makes for an exciting and fierce rivalry between several extremely strong compatitors.
“On Sunday, I saw many Tinkoff-Saxo riders pushing hard and eventually decided to give it a go. I planned to attack on the steepest slopes because only this way I could improve my position in the general classification. I attacked and my courage paid off,” Pozzovivo told in the Ultimo Chilometro radio programme.
“Now an idea to target the podium spot planted in my mind,” the Ag2R La Mondiale leader said, “but it’s essential how well I am going to ride the Barolo-Barbaresco time trial. I know that it is a route for specialists against the clock, but I can be capable of limiting my losses to the likes of Evans even if the course favors him more than me.”
