Damiano Cunego has a strong desire for revenge. After a long career with Lampre, the Italian has decided to change and next year he will be the captain of the Nippo-Fantini-De Rosa team which will step up to pro continental level.
"After so many years with the same team, I had lot the stimulus a little bit," he said in an interview with Tg Gialloblu di Telenuovo. "I didn't have the same desire and passion as before. I was proposed this new experience and I accepted it immediately. I wanted a change. It is a new project, with many young riders, and they signed me to be their captain in certain races."
Cunego has clear ideas for 2015 and his focus is on "the Giro d'Italia" and hopes to prepare at "the Giro del Trentino and Settimana Coppi e Bartali that I will do with my eyes on the big goal." The preparation will begin "in December with gym sessions and later bike riding" to be ready for a team training camp that should allow him to start the early season races in good condition.
"The last two years have not been exciting," he added. "But I am not one who dwells too much on it because I have a life besides cycling. I have a family that supports me a lot. And now I am studying at university so when I am at home, I forget about the bike and have thousand other things to focus on."
The possible revival of Cunego will be one of the interesting points in the 2015 season. He has the desire and he will have the support from the Nippo team. He is now only waiting for the verdict on the road in what could be one of the final seasons of his professional career.
"I have a two-year contract," he said. "At the end of it, we will see how things have gone. I will be 35 years old. At that age, you know that your career won't continue for many years."
